How about something like:
Identity theft can be defined as a crime used to refer to fraud that involves someone pretending to be someone else in order to steal money or get other benefits. Thefts can range from posing as someone on the internet, or accessing someone’s finances and stealing money. Put your hand if you or anyone you know has been the victim of identity theft. (pause for a few seconds…hopefully someone will put their hand up, but it doesn’t matter if not). It is now estimated that XXX people are the victims of identity theft each year.
