??????? LIL BEAR ??????? asked:
I am giving a safety presentation next week at work on identity theft. What are some ways you can protect your identity? What are some things people do with your identity. How do they get your information? Do you know of any websites where I can get more info? Thanks!

There are many sites called “Phishing sites” that are purposely designed to offer so called products and services. Theyre main purpose/objective is to gain person information/details.
The information could possibly be used for marketing purposes.
You should definitely take a look at wikipedia.
Well I am not sure if you are talking about in person identity theft like a purse or wallet stollen or computer/internet identity theft.
For in person, make sure the victim calls all three credit bureau’s. Experian, Trans Union and Equifax to put report their identiy has been stolen. They will put something like a 2 year block on your credit and everytime your credit is ran with out your knowledge then that credit bureau will call you to verify it. This happened to me.
Check out the credit bureau web sites for more info on that. Also have them contact their local Social Security office.
If it’s online. I would recommend anyone paying for merchandise online to get the prepaid visa’s. This saves a lot of hassle and worry from identity theft online.
When a person can not use the prepaid visa cards and have to put in their personal information like ebay and paypal. I would recommend the contact any company whom has their online personal info to put special security features on the accounts. In today’s day in age it’s scarey and with so many hackers it going to happen. It happened to me via online as well. I got taken for $11,000.00. I was lucky and knew the guy and sued him. However everyone is this lucky.
Maybe some of the sites I list below will give you some more information. Best of luck to you on your speech.
Oh one more thing. If a person is wanting to do business with a company where personal info will be used, then have them first check out the company on the BBB site and see if they are repitable (spelling).
It also never hurts to have a good security system on your computer. There are so many out there that I actually can’t recommend just one. Try checking out for a good suggestion on one.
